Swiss Jewry: An Island in the Twentieth Century:
Narrated by Edward Asner, this program examines through the eyes of the appropriate international governmental, organizational, legal, and communal structures the major issues
of post-Holocaust restitution that have arisen in Switzerland since
1995;
specifically, Nazi gold, wartime refugees, and dormant bank accounts of
Holocaust victims and heirs.
Particular emphasis is given to the
impact of these
issues on the Swiss Jewish community, which reeled not from the substantive underlying issues (Swiss Jews are generally not the beneficiaries of the restitution), but from the negative effects generated by the ways in which the larger disputes were resolved.
Cognizant that the
post-Holocaust restitution issues in Switzerland were the first on a list of
related controversies worldwide, the documentary takes a critical look at the processes through which the matters were settled with the goal of broadening
the vision of every group involved and protecting the interests of local
communities.
In a highly acclaimed new book,
The Victim's Fortune, authors John Authers and Richard Wolffe quote an interview from
Swiss Jewry: An Island in the Twentieth Century, referring to the program as "an excellent documentary"!
